Skills and Concepts:
Understanding Audience, Clear and Concise Writing, Document Design
These reports were each small, weekly assignments in a fundamentals class. Taken on their own, none prove much about me as a writer. When viewed as a group however, these documents show my ability to adapt to different writing circumstances and conform to genre.
This fundamentals class was about writing different types of documents. Organization, layout, and sense of audience were critically important to writing a successful piece. The goal of the Instructions document was to develop a procedure for a task of our choosing, written to an audience with no prior experience. For the Proposal, we were asked to draft a report proposing an idea to a real-life business in our area. Finally, in the Formal Report we were to write a report from the point of a view of a consultant working for a company.
Each of these reports has a different audience and therefore different needs. This is reflected in the tone and voice of each document. The Instructions are short, concise, and clear. The Proposal is professional and persuasive. The Formal Report is informative and extensive.
No matter what type of document I am writing, I put the audience at the fore of my mind. Their needs and expectations are the most important consideration.
